According to ABNT standards (NBR 12809 and 10004), waste that is not classified as hazardous may be treated as regular trash and, therefore, may be disposed of in the trash or the municipal sewer system. However, in the case of chemical waste, every precaution must be taken. The best option is to never dispose of it in the trash or the sewer system. Check whether it can be donated, recycled, or recovered.
Non-alkaline batteries, batteries, paints and solvents, expired medications, fluorescent light bulbs, insecticides, and packaging for pesticides and chemicals are considered toxic waste; non-biodegradable substances are found in plastics, cleaning products, pesticides, and electronic devices, and in the radioactivity emitted by uranium and other radioactive metals, such as cesium, used in power plants, nuclear weapons, and medical equipment. Cadmium, nickel, mercury, and lead are the main contaminants. Proper separation of these materials is very important to prevent soil and groundwater contamination.
